The University of Florida operates a commercial and public media enterprise through the UF College of Journalism and Communications and founded the nationally-recognized and award-winning Florida Public Radio Emergency Network (“FPREN” in 2013.  Since that time FPREN has provided public safety and emergency alerting content to more than 17 public broadcasting television and radio stations, digital and social media support and the development of the Florida Storms mobile app.  UF radio station WUFT and FPREN have been recognized with the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s “Community Lifeline” award in 2019, the Florida Emergency Preparedness Association Media Award in 2015 and 2024 and the 2023 Government Productivity Award from Florida TaxWatch.  The University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications is led by Dean Hub Brown and the Division of Media Properties including WUFT and FPREN is under the leadership of Randy Wright, the BEACON concept founder.
